Millions of Muslims observe Ashura to honor martyrdom Imam Hussein

Ashura, the 10th day of Muharram, is being observed by millions globally in remembrance of Imam Hussein (AS), who was martyred in the Battle of Karbala.

AhlulBayt News Agency: Millions of Muslims around the world are commemorating Ashura, marking the martyrdom anniversary of Imam Hussein (AS), the third Shia Imam and grandson of Prophet Mohammad (Peace be upon Him).

This year in Iran, Ashura — the 10th day of the Islamic lunar month of Muharram — falls on a Sunday.

Wearing black garments, Shia Muslims gather to mourn the death of Imam Hussein (AS), who was martyred alongside 72 of his followers in the Battle of Karbala in 680 AD. He was killed resisting the forces of Umayyad Caliph Yazid I.

Across Iran, mourning processions are held, elegies are recited, and people distribute free meals, known as nazri, as a sign of devotion and remembrance.

Ashura marks the peak of ten days of mourning that begin with the start of Muharram.

The eve of Ashura, known as Tasu’a, honors Abbas ibn Ali (PBUH), Imam Hussein’s half-brother, who was martyred while attempting to deliver water to the thirsty women and children in the Imam’s camp.

Globally, Shia communities observe the rituals, and hundreds of thousands of pilgrims travel to Karbala in Iraq to visit the shrine of Imam Hussein and take part in the commemorations.

Muharram ceremonies represent the enduring struggle of truth against falsehood and the human commitment to resist injustice, oppression, and tyranny — the very cause for which Imam Hussein gave his life.
